2012 Swim Team Rosters
Dear Shark Families,

Please click here to see our 2012 swim team rosters. Note that these rosters are not final and we may have to make changes  in order to balance out the age and gender groups on each team as we finish the evaluation and registration process. Siblings will always be placed on the same swim team with the exception being families who have children in the rookie program and on one of our swim teams.

Please check the rosters carefully to ensure:
  1. Your child’s name appears on one of the rosters.
  2. Your children who qualified for the Hammerheads or Makos are placed on the same team.
New swimmers were given the opportunity to state a team preference at the time of registration. The majority of our new swimmers stated they had no preference; however, for those who did prefer one team over the other, we tried to honor as many of your requests as possible. If your swimmer was not placed on his/her preferred team, it is because our first priority is to balance out the age and gender groups on each team. We also have to take the overall team size into consideration since each team may swim no more than 120 swimmers in a meet. Parents, if your child is disappointed that (s)he is not on the team with his/her friends, please explain that all swimmers, regardless of team placement, practice every day with their same aged friends. Your child will also quickly make many new friends this summer.

While we don’t anticipate making many changes to the rosters, if we do make any, we will notify you. If your name is in the unassigned column, please contact Chris Lash at lash.cc@gmail.com to schedule a swim assessment so we can determine whether your child should be in our rookie program or on one of our swim teams.

Kelly Van Nort, our Hammerhead Team Coordinator, has been working on our 2012 swim calendar. You may access the calendar from the Calendar menu item on the front page of our website at http://smyrnasharks.org to find out practice dates and times, swim meet dates, and dates for rookie races.

We look forward to seeing Hammerheads and Makos at practice next week and Rookies at their first practice on Tuesday, May 29. Rookies, you will be contacted before your first practice to sign up for practice times for the season. Any refund requests must be made before our first scheduled practice on Monday, May 14.

Lastly, parents, please use a Sharpie to write your child’s first name and age on the back of his shoulder before practice. You will need to continue this the first few weeks of practice—especially if your child is new to the team. This will help coaches place your children correctly at practice and will help the coaches learn your children’s names.

Go Sharks!

Practice Times

We are 90% finished assessing swimmers and assigning teams. While we thought that the 9/10 year old age group would be the largest, it turns out it is still the 7/8year olds.  So, practice times will remain the same as last year. The website will be updated and reflect the times shortly.  In the meantime, the times are listed below.

We will have teams posted on our website by Friday at the latest so you know if you are on the rookie team, Hammerhead or Mako teams. Those not yet assessed will be placed in unassigned and moved as they are assessed.

Practice is set to begin this Monday, May 14th, from 5 - 8pm

Swimmers aged 5 - 8 who have been assigned a team will practice from 5pm - 6pm
Swimmers aged 9/10 will practice from 6 - 7pm
Swimmers aged 11 & Up will practice from 6pm - 8pm

Morning Practice Times Beginning Tuesday, May 29th. (NO practice May 28th Memorial Day Holiday)

Swimmers in age groups 5/6 & 9/10 will practice from 8 - 9am
Swimmers in age group 7/8 will practice from 9 - 10am
Swimmers aged 11 & up will practice at night from 7 - 9pm on M,T, W and F nights

Rookies will begin Tuesday, May 29th, the first morning practice of the season as well as that night.

Sign ups for time slots will follow in approximately one week.
You may only practice during your assigned time.

We are allowing swimmers whose parents work in the morning to come to night practice.  You must have contacted us in advance and be on our list of swimmers approved for swimming at night if you are under the age of 11.

Meet nights are Thursday.  We can't promise your fins will be here by the first practice but we will let you know when they arrive.

Registration

Welcome to 2012 Swim and Dive Team Registration!

Registration will open Saturday, March 24 at 12:01am. When you are registering, please check carefully to make sure you are signing up for swim if that is your preference or dive if that is your preference. Last year we had a number of swimmers mistakenly register for the dive team. If you do discover that you have registered incorrectly, please send an email to registration@smyrnasharks.org as soon as possible so we can correct your registration.

If you a returning swimmer or diver and your email address has changed, please make sure you select "Account Settings" after logging into the registration system and update your email address and/or any other information that may have changed. Email is our primary method of communication and having correct email addresses is critical.

Dive Team Registration

The dive team is for divers ages 4 to 18 as of May 31. We do not have our 2012 dive schedule yet; however, the dive team traditionally has 5 regular season meets on Wednesday evenings that begin at 5:30 pm. We do have a number of children who participate on the dive team and the swim team.

Returning Swimmers and Returning Rookies

If  your child was a  Mako, Hammerhead, or Rookie during the 2011 season, please register for the team you were assigned to last year. If you don’t remember, you may click here to see last season’s team assignments. If your child was a Rookie last year and you think (s)he may qualify for either the Mako or Hammerhead swim team this year, you must still register your child as a Rookie. We will conduct swim evaluations before the season begins and if your Rookie is able to meet the swim team requirements, (s)he will be placed on one of our swim teams.

New Swimmers Ages 4 to 8

All new swimmers who are ages 4 to 8 as of May 31 must register as a Rookie. If your child is 5 or older as of May 31, (s)he may qualify for our swim team. We will conduct swim evaluations before practices begin to determine the correct placement for your child.

New Swimmers Ages 9 to 18

All new swimmers who are ages 9 to 18 as of May 31 should choose Unknown/Other for the team selection.

If you are interested in swimming on the swim team (being an active participant in both practice and meets) and being a paid junior coach, please contact Leigh Landon at happymommy@aol.com. The number of hours junior coaches will be scheduled is at the discretion of the head coach and the coordinators and will depend on experience, availability and performance. A junior coach must be 15 by June 1st.

2012 Smyrna Swim and Dive Team Registration Info
Dear Parents:

Registration is about to begin.  This Saturday morning at approx. 12:01am the registration will go live assuming no unforeseen issues pop up.  You will receive an email from Dan Ruehle our technology guru giving you the link to the registration page for signing up. If an age group fills up, you will be notified that you are on the wait list.  This does not mean you are not on the team. We just have to wait until final numbers are in the system.

A few changes this year.
1.  The City of Smyrna has instituted a $15 participant fee for everyone in a Smyrna sport. And the fee for non Smyrna residents has gone up from $5 to $10.

2.  The fee this year is $150 for all Swim and $180 for Dive. These fees already include the $15 per member Smyrna participation fee.  It does not include the non Smyrna resident fee of $10.  There will be a separate line on the registration page for this.  If you are on both the Swim and Dive team you will have to pay $15 for both.  We will be crediting back to your account one of the $15 (and $10 non resident fees) as right now the software is unable to to just bill once. For Example: You have 2 swimmers and both are on the swim and dive teams.  You will be charged $150 x 2 = $300 plus $180 x 2 = $360 They are non Smyrna residents. That is $10 x 4 = $40.  So $300 + $360 + $40  = $700.  You will receive a $50 (2 x $15 and 2 x $10 =$50) credit back to your account as you only have to pay the fee once.  There is a chance this could be fixed by live time.  Dan Ruehle will let you know in the registration email if it was correctable. We have gone out of our way to ensure you do not have to pay twice with the city.

3.  If you pay by check this year, you will have 2 weeks from the day you register to send in your check.  If the check is not received then we will take you out of the registration system.  You will have to re-register and potentially risk being on the wait list.  The final day to pay is the day before practice starts.  Anyone signing up within the final 2 weeks before practice must pay before the first day of practice.  Those registering after practice has started must pay in full the day of registration. Swimmers will not be allowed in the pool who have not paid, as you are not covered by insurance and we will not allow uninsured swimmers in the water.  This will be strictly enforced this year.

4.  There will be a new team suit this year with 2 options. Last years suit is acceptable and may be worn.   A less expensive version and a more durable suit that should last no less than 2 years and 4 + years depending on how often worn.  The longer lasting suit will basically cost what you paid for last year's suit which was not a long lasting durable suit.  The less expensive suit will be the same brand/quality as last yea'rs suit but cost less.   The fitting will be announced at a later date.  We will have fins, goggles, caps for sale as well, all for less than you have paid in the past.  We require all swimmers of all ages wear at swim meets either the current team suit, a previous team suit or a suit that is purple, black or combo of those 2 colors only.  No other suits are allowed at meets.  Rookies are welcome to purchase a team suit but are not required. All girls and boys with long hair must wear a swim cap.

5. Practice times have not been determined yet and will be based on the size of age groups once registration is complete.  They are subject to change from last year.

I am happy to announce that the Head Coaches Sergiy Useinov and Emily Lash, will be returning this season. Cortney Hinton will also be returning all the way from Florida to head up our rookie program.

Kelly Van Nort will be returning as the Hammerhead Coordinator and Doug Tilt (team and board Treasurer) will be in his first season as the Mako Coordinator and 2nd season as treasurer and board member. I can't even begin to say enough Thank you's to them both, but I try and if you see them please do the same.

New board members and officers  for 2012 were voted on and finalized.
Chris Lash -  President
Drew Austin - Vice President/Secretary
Doug Tilt - Treasurer
Dan Ruehle - Head Technology Guru ( I just can't come up with a name that sounds better.)
Rob Young
Leigh Landon -  Jr. Coach Coordinator
Murray Israel

I had several requests of what was involved for being a board member but as you know only 7 people actually submitted info to be a candidate.  We are a large team and I would love for more people to become involved and have a say in the direction and growth of Smyrna swimming.

Meet night is Thursday night for both teams.  Hammerheads do have one week where they have a meet on Tues. instead of Thurs.  Mako has their 1st, 3rd and 5th meets at home. The Hammerheads have their 2nd and 4th meets at home.

More information will be following.

Private Lessons
Our Hammerheads' head coach, Sergiy Useinov, is available to give private lessons at the Georgia Tech pool.  $30/30 minutes.  Call him to schedule (404) 729-7990.
